Learning From Our Neighbors
While it may be true that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” there are many instances where a community wants to be independent from their neighbors and blaze their own path. However, when it comes to being prepared in the event of a natural disaster, it is acceptable and encouraged to learn from our neighbor’s experiences. Community officials encounter multiple difficult decisions during a storm – if or when to evacuate neighborhoods or communities, managing reservoirs, and deploying resources before, during and afterward – and your response will define the outcomes of the event.
During this session, participants will increase their knowledge of pre-disaster preparation, actions during ongoing disasters, and post-disaster resiliency using a combination of hands-on learning exercises intertwined with real-world case studies from storm events in Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. Scenarios covered will explore topics such as advance asset evaluation/documentation, enhanced communication plans, understanding the data, preparing for contracting repairs and preparing for mitigation.
