North Carolina Bridge Work Featured in APWA Newsletter

A community Thank You

After a vital connector road for the Town of Wilkesboro, North Carolina, was reopened following construction to repair major storm damage, residents were so delighted that they posted a brightly hand-painted “Thank You” sign on the bridge rail.

APWA North Carolina featured this example of community service through public works in the September newsletter.

The story was told in “A New Bridge Provides a Lifeline for a Wilkesboro Neighborhood” by Freese and Nichols’ Bryan Dick, Group Manager for Stormwater and Environmental – SE, and Emily Brown and Lydia Ward, both Stormwater and Environmental engineers in the Winston-Salem office.

During the project, the Town worked with Freese and Nichols to develop repair options for culverts ripped out by a storm. A multidisciplinary team that included specialists in water resource design, structural, transportation, stormwater, fluvial ecosystem restoration and construction management then completed the bridge design and oversaw construction. The project team also assisted with federal and state permits.
